Description
Detectives from Bristol have arrived in Maidenhead to escort a man back to the West Country tonight after an armed bank robbery and a hundred-mile chase along the M4 to Berkshire. A policeman is in hospital with gunshot wounds, and two other men are being treated after police exchanged shots with the armed gang. The drama had started outside a bank in Bristol city centre when two armed robbers escaped with cash. Their getway car was stopped by police and an unarmed officer William Burns was shot in the mouth. He is said to be seriously ill but his life is not in danger. A man was injured and taken into police custody after police exchanged shots outside a hospital in the city. Then a milk lorry was hijacked and the driver forced to head for motorway. Police along the M4 from Avon to London were alerted, but it was Thames Valley Police who brought the chase to ancend. [Box 2]
