Shakespeare and Music

Synopsis
Video recording of a live event hosted by Mairi Nicolson made as a preview of concerts by the
Melbourne Symphony Orchestra on 22 and 24 April 2021 devoted to music inspired by Shakespeare. They discuss the concert program, which is made up of the overture from Berlioz Béatrice et Bénédict; Melody Eötvös’ Ruler of the Hive; and the rarely performed Ballet Music from the third act of Verdi’s Macbeth.

Speakers include actor Pamela Rabe, conductor Johannes Fritzsch and composer Melody Eötvös, whose 2018 piece for orchestra and narrator, Ruler of the Hive, is inspired by five of Shakespeare’s female characters: Emilia from Othello, Beatrice from Much Ado About Nothing, Helena from All’s Well That Ends Well, Isabella from Measure for Measure and Rosalind from As You Like It.
