Synopsis

Radio broadcast. A programme for the Bicentenary of the death of David Garrick in January 1779.
For three days in September 1769 Garrick master-minded the Shakespeare Jubilee at Stratford-upon-Avon in a storm of publicity, praise and detraction -
"A Jubilee, as it hath lately appeared, is a public invitation to go to an obscure borough to celebrate a great poet whose own works have made him immortal, by an ode without poetry, music without harmony, dinner without victuals and lodging without bed..." (Samuel Foote). For all its chaos, the Jubilee put Stratford on the map; and Garrick’s near-disaster became a personal triumph when he re-staged its best moments at Drury Lane. The programme recreates a remarkable occasion from eye-witness accounts. Edward Kelsey narrates.
