Synopsis
Peter Brook talks to Mark Lawson in the Lyttelton Theatre, National Theatre about his career and his new book, The Quality of Mercy: Reflections on Shakespeare a collection of essays on his lifelong interest in interpreting Shakespeare’s words for contemporary audiences. Brook speaks at some length on the ‘absurdity’ of the authorship question and why it has become an industry and is deep-rooted in social class. He talks about the staging of King Lear, his audience with the Pope which he found a piece of great theatre, and verse speaking.
