Synopsis
Poetry celebration of Shakespeare with focus on his sonnets and the use of poetry in his plays. Poetry readings by actors Ion Caramitru and Michael Pennington. The following sonnets and extracts were read at the event: In English and Romanian: Sonnets 18, 116, 129, 130 and 147. In English only: Sonnets 2, 29, 65, 71, 73, 87, 118, 131 and 135. In addition: Mercutio’s "Queen Mab" speech from Romeo and Juliet, "To Be or Not to Be" from Hamlet, and the "dagger" speech from Macbeth.

Poet in the City is a prominent London-based poetry charity, specialising in large-scale live events aimed at new audiences for poetry. Founded in 1999 by Rosamund McCarthy as a project of the Poetry Society, it became an independent charity in 2006. Event organised by Poet in the City in partnership with The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust and The Romanian Cultural Institute. Recorded at King’s Place, London.
