Shakespeare’s First Acts: Pericles

Synopsis
Natalie Abrahami, Artistic Director of the Gate Theatre, tells Sophie Reynolds about the first act of Pericles, which she directed for the Regents Park Open Air Theatre in 2011. Her brief was to direct a 50-minute play, with six characters and a contemporary prologue, suitable for children aged 6 upwards. Abrahami cut most of the first act from the play and she explains why. This interview is part of Theatrevoice’s new series for Olympics year 2012, looking at the beginning of each of Shakespeare’s play. Interview recorded at the V&A.

General
Theatrevoice is a website for audio content about British theatre, and features journalists from across the UK as well as press and practitioners from across the theatre industry. It was set up in 2003 to see if theatre could be talked about in a new way: allowing critics to be more expansive than the usual space constraints of the print media allowed. In 2008, V&A Theatre Collections and Rose Bruford College, London agreed to support the site in partnership. (http://www.theatrevoice.com/about_us/, accessed 7/2010)
