Directing Shakespeare

Synopsis
Audio debate. Shakespearean acting teacher Ada Brown Mather discusses directing Shakespeare with Zoe Caldwell, Gerald Freedman and Stuart Vaughn. Mather introduces the work of the panellists, and then begins a discussion framed by the question "why do we get so excited about how Shakespeare is directed from age to age?" The discussion ranges across rehearsal practices, the directorial techniques and approaches of the panellists, and the American aptitude for producing good Shakespeare. The one idea that unites the panellist is to try above all to be true to his text.
