Synopsis: Bellini’s setting of Vaccai’s version of Romeo and Juliet. The version differs from Shakespeare’s play in featuring two rival political factions instead of families, there is no balcony scene, and the role of Romeo written is written for a woman. Elina Garanca and Anna Netrebko sing the title roles. Mark Elder conducts the Royal Opera Chorus and the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.
