Magic of Romeo and Juliet, The

Synopsis

Television documentary. Choreographer Kenneth MacMillan created Romeo and Juliet for The Royal Ballet in 1965. The ballet was conceived for Christopher Gable and Lynn Seymour but Nureyev and Fonteyn took the parts when the ballet gave its first performance. The work was an instant success and is considered by many to be the definitive version of Prokofiev’s original score. Dancer Jonathan Cope goes behind the scenes of the current production at the Royal Opera House and explores what makes this one of the most compelling of all narrative ballets.
