- Synopsis
- Lecture by Professor Robert Greenberg of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. In programme four of the series Professor Greenberg lectures on Felix Mendelssohn’s Incidental Music, op. 61 and Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream, op. 21 and Franz Liszt’s Totentanz. He gives a plot synopsis of the play and speaks of the main characters while listening to the relevant sections of Mendelssohn’s music. He compares Mendelssohn’s interpretation of Shakespeare’s comedy with Liszt’s virtuosic example of the Romantic era’s fascination with the Gothic and the macabre in his work based on the 14th-century Black Death.
