Berry, Ralph. Shakespeare Quarterly 34 (1983):93-96 (in review article). Berry writes `... Here I detect a change in the directors’ perception of The
Tempest. The dark centre of the play used to be
Caliban, and his relationship with Prospero one
of great tension. Ariels were fey and peripheral.
Nowadays, directors have gone off Caliban: I
suspect that they are bored with symbols of colonial oppression, and have rung all the changes
they can on Red Indians and Rastafarians...'
