Synopsis

Christie Carson interviews Chris Dyer about stage design. Dyer is Associate Artist of the Royal Shakespeare Company, Senior Lecturer in Design for Performance at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design and Director of Research for Virtual Space. He talks of his schooling and career and the influences of sixties art movements on his design work. He speaks on the different design processes needed for different performances in terms of time and budget, audience expectations in a proscenium theatre and a designer’s involvement in the rehearsal process. He discusses The Other Place and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. He dislikes working with another designer on the same production and talks of the trust needed between designer and director. He talks of the influence of other designers including Bill Dudley, John Napier and Josef Svoboda. He comments on working with individual directors such as Michael Bogdanov and Buzz Goodbody and on individual plays. He comments on making Shakespeare work for young audiences and the changes in British theatre design over forty years.
