Shakespeare: Macbeth

Synopsis
Rupert Goold, director of the Headlong Theatre company, talks to Heather Neill about his acclaimed Chichester Festival Theatre 2007 production of Macbeth, starring Patrick Stewart and Kate Fleetwood. Goold talks about the notion of an older Macbeth and a younger wife and notes that the destructive relationship between Paul McCartney and Heather Mills loomed large in rehearsal and became the model. He talks about the production design (much influenced by films set in kitchens such as THE SHINING) and more generally about the influence of cinema in the works of Lars von Trier, Wes Craven and Peter Greenaway. He also discusses why he looked to Russian history and terrorism, the concept of the witches, and why he believes fear is at its strongest when one is in a familiar and comfortable setting.

General
Theatrevoice is a website for audio content about British theatre, and features journalists from across the UK as well as press and practitioners from across the theatre industry. It was set up in 2003 to see if theatre could be talked about in a new way: allowing critics to be more expansive than the usual space constraints of the print media allowed. In 2008, V&A Theatre Collections and Rose Bruford College, London agreed to support the site in partnership. (http://www.theatrevoice.com/about_us/, accessed 7/2010)
History
The production premiered at the Minerva studio theatre on May 25, 2007 and transferred from Chichester to the refurbished Gielgud Theatre, London on September 21, 2007.
