Synopsis
Radio broadcast. As part of a series of 26 weekly programmes "designed as an anthology of the best-known and best-loved speeches and scenes" from Shakespeare’s better known plays, this episode (19) showcases ‘the best of’ King Lear with Stephen Murray in the title role and Alec McCowan as Fool. The full production was originally broadcast on BBC Third Programme on 22/6/1960.

According to the programme notes in London Calling, more than half of the programmes were produced specially for the General Overseas Service, while the rest is taken from ‘classic’ BBC productions of the previous 20 years (London Calling, April 1964, 3: 13, p. 4).

The series was transmitted as part of the ‘Shakespeare Quatercentenary’ celebrations of the General Overseas Service.
