Notes

General
Dorn said of the production ‘the driving force of all these figures is their fear that death might have come before life - their fear of dying without ever having lived’. His choice of an older cast matched this idea. It has been assumed that the cast in the 1986 revival is the same as the original cast - a recording of the 1986 revival is the one held by ZDF and the Goethe Institute.
History
Produced at the Kammerspiele, Munich, beginning 20 January 1980; revived, winter 1986-87. A television recording of the revival was made by ZDF and shown on the Theaterkanal on 4 February 2005 and is available from ZDF Programme Service, email: programmservice@zdf.de, http://www.theaterkanal.de/fernsehen/mitschnitt/. A video cassette was distributed by Focus Films in 1986, now unavailable.
Textual information
Translated into German by Michael Wachsmann and Dieter Dorn.
Reviews
The stage 1980 production was reviewed by Klaus Bartenschlager in Shakespeare Quarterly 32 9(1981), pp. 385-7. Bartenschlager writes ‘the actor’s performed on an empty stage - a white box with sliding door on both sides ... and without a single change of lighting ... Not even their completely unrealistic and anachronistic dress, which was worn inside out, was allowed to create any purely theatrical illusion detracting from the actors’ creation of character, motive and human interaction’.
