Macbeth

Synopsis
Anthology arts series. The programme examines how the ideas which Shakespeare’s play addresses (tyranny, ambition, power) have resonances in twentieth and twenty-first century politics and political regimes. It also looks at the nature of power in women and how the power balance between the Macbeths is mirrored in contemporary political couples (e.g. the Clintons and the Blairs). There are excerpts from several film and television versions of Macbeth and scenes from Conall Morrison’s 2007 production for the Royal Shakespeare Company. Concludes with a clip from THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND (2006) which writer Giles Foden says was informed by Macbeth. Readings are by Simon Russell Beale.
