Muppets Tonight [15/03/1996]

Synopsis
Television series featuring The Muppets. In this episode Clifford is about to introduce Garth Brooks when Rizzo comes out to tell him that Garth is wearing an effeminate shirt, tights, and bloomers. Clifford says he can’t let Garth go on looking like that, and Rizzo suggests they put on Bill the Bubble Guy. So Clifford introduces Garth "as you’ve never seen him before." Instead of singing ‘Surrey With a Fringe On Top’ with Miss Piggy, he decides to do the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet. Miss Piggy has to put on reading glasses to read her lines off the cue cards, and gives a hopeless performance. Andy and Randy Pig enter, wearing Shakespearean costume (including bloomers), and introduce themselves as "the two gentlemen from Bologna". Piggy remarks, "more like the two meatheads from Bologna." After Piggy fails to deliver her final line correctly, Andy and Randy notice that the balcony isn’t very secure, and proceed to bring it down on Garth’s head.

Statler: "Shakespeare woulda hated that."
Waldorf: "You should know, you dated his sister!"
They laugh
Statler: "Boy, was she ugly."

General
MUPPETS TONIGHT was an American-produced continuation of the British THE MUPPET SHOW, set in a television studio, rather than a theatre. The premise was that Clifford (a Muppet who first appeared on The JIM HENSON HOUR and was voiced by Kevin Clash) was the host of a variety/talk show on KMUP. The show stuck closely to The MUPPET SHOW format of various skits (mostly featuring the show’s human guest star) interspersed with various crises occurring backstage.
