General
Kenneth MacMillan created IMAGES OF LOVE as part of a triple bill staged by the Royal Ballet to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the birth of Shakespeare. The ballet had nine separate sections, each introduced by a recording of some lines by Shakespeare, spoken by actor Derek Godfrey. Each quotation included the word ‘love’, and MacMillan’s choreography reflected what each one suggested to him.
History
The ballet was first performed April 2 1964 at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.
