Shakespeare Enigma, The

Synopsis
A debate on the authorship of Shakespeare. Professor Stanley Wells, from the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust expounds his view that Shakespeare wrote the plays. Francis Carr propounds the theory that Francis Bacon was the illegitimate son of Elizabeth I and was the true author. Mark Rylance, Artistic Director of the Globe Theatre, London, also believes that Bacon could have been the author and gives his first extended interview on the subject. Author A.D. Wraight promotes the theory that Christopher Marlowe wrote the plays and faked his own death to avoid torture for his atheist views. Two members of the de Vere Society discuss why they believe Edward de Vere, Earl of Oxford to be the author and adopted Shakespeare’s name. Narrated by Ashley Franklin.
