Synopsis
Looks at central themes in Macbeth using discussion, rehearsal and performance of key scenes. Also examines the social and historical context of the play. In four parts: 1) The Supernatural - Act I, Scenes i and iii: the witches - how the initial scenes with the witches set the atmosphere for the play; why the witches’ words have so much power over Macbeth. 2) Kingship and power - Act II, Scene iii: after the murder - Macbeth’s emotional state after the murder; why Lady Macbeth faints; 3) Guilt and responsibility - Act III, Scene iv: banqueting scene - the effect of the ghost on Macbeth; the relationship between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth at the end of the scene; Act III, Scene iv: banqueting scene - the effect of the ghost on Macbeth; the relationship between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth at the end of the scene; 4) Sanity and insanity - Act V, Scenes i, iii and v: sleepwalking scene - why Lady Macbeth talks in her sleep; what this scene reveals about her role in the play.
