Macbeth: Murder and the March of Destiny

Synopsis
Explores the question of dramatic irony in relation to the scene in which Duncan enters Macbeth’s castle. Analyses specific episodes including the argument between Macbeth and his wife concerning the validity of murder, the murder scene itself, the porter’s foolery, the banquet scene, and Macbeth’s second encounter with the witches. Finally, discusses the staging of the play, the primacy of language, the criminal as hero, and the timelessness of Shakespeare’s theme.
