Lazarus

Summary: 1960 BBC production of Pirandello’s Lazarus.

Play synopsis: Sicilian husband and wife Diego and Sarah part owing to differing views, especially with regard to the education of their children Lucio and Leah. Sergio sends Lucio to a seminary and Leah to a convent. Lucio refuses to become a priest. Diego dies in an accident but is brought back to life as if by a miracle. But he now understands the so-called afterlife to be meaningless, having ramifications for what is to follow in the family drama.
Production history: First performed in Huddersfield in July 1929 (in English translation); first performance in Italy took place in December 1929 in Turin.
