Play synopsis

Seven years before the action of the play, newly widowed Irene Carey left England for the West Indies, placing her twelve-year-old daughter Sally in the care of her grandmother. The play opens with her old neighbours awaiting her return. Sally is now staying with them. It looks to be a happy reunion, but each of them feels ‘a sense of guilt’, as suggested by the title.

Production history

First published by the English Theatre Guild in 1960 which suggests that there may have been a stage production before the BBC’s January 1960 television production.
