Play synopsis: The story of a family through three generations which takes place in Kensington in the years 1860, 1885 and 1912. ‘John and Rose are followed from the days when they are Young Things, all fresh and impulsive, to the days when they are Grandpa and Grandma, all very (in no political sense) conservative. There is throughout the play a sense of generation succeeding generation. The young lover of the opening scenes is the somewhat tyrannical father of the end of the play; it is thought horrible in 1860 that girls might ride on the top of an omnibus: the years pass over the girl who becomes a mother; the young are always knocking at the door.'
