Play synopsis: This play combines Bridie’s interest in the Bible with his sense of fantasy. A fairy tale based on the Biblical story, the play contains symbolism and satire. Jonah is a small-toen prophet from Gittah Hepher in Palestine. It is ordained that he will prophesy the destruction of Nineveh. He attempts to avoid this by travelling in the opposite direction to Nineveh but the ship in which he is travelling encounters a violent storm. Jonah is thrown overbaord, swallowed by a whale and duly deposited to go and do his duty.
