Two Roses

Summary: 1963 Granada Television production for ITV of Two Roses by James Albery, presented in the eight-play series The Victorians. All eight plays were performed by the Company of Seven, a group especially formed for the series.

Play synopsis: A comedy. Digby Grant is a scoundrel and an overbearing father (based on the real-life man Chevalier Wikoff who lived in Brighton at the close of the 19th century) who borrows money from everyone and tries to marry his daughters off to the highest bidder. When he is informed that he is heir to a fortune he withdraws them from the marriage ‘market’ and refuses to let them see the men they really love (adapted from TV Times, 21 June 1963, p. 17).
Production history: First produced at the Vaudeville Theatre, London in 1870; in this production, which ran for 300 performances, Sir Henry Irving made one of his earliest London successes as Digby Grant.
