Off-Air Recording Back-Up Service

Have you ever missed recording a television programme you wanted to use in teaching? Learning on Screen’s Off-Air Back-Up Recording Service can help.

We are the only third party organisation in mainland UK holding a letter of agreement with the ERA permitting the post-transmission supply of copies of broadcasts under Section 35 of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 to UK higher and further education. This gives member institutions access to the 73,000 hours of UK broadcast television and radio we record each year, an archive that currently holds over one million hours.

Copies of programmes can be requested using Learning on Screen’s extensive Television and Radio Index for Teaching and Learning (TRILT), our online database and ordering system. The service is only available to Education Institutions with an ERA licence and membership of Learning on Screen. The service is not available to members of the general public.

Coverage
The service currently records London broadcasts of BBC1, BBC2, BBC4 (since March 2002), ITV1, Channel 4, Channel 5, More 4 (since June 2010), BBC Radio 4 (since September 2008) and BBC Radio 4 Extra (since September 2009). We recorded BBC Three from February 2003 until February 2016, when it ceased on-air broadcasting. Regional programming, unless also shown in London, is not available.

NOTE: Please be advised that all programmes broadcast prior to the 1st April 2008 are classified as archive recordings, and as such can take up to five weeks for completion from the date the order was placed.
