- Summary
- COI synopsis: Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, were greeted in Brasilia by the President with his wife, Senora de Silva. After addressing the National Assembly the Queen attended a banquet at the Itamarity Palace. A visit to Sao Paulo was followed by a reception given by Her Majesty and the Duke on board the Royal Yacht. A football match between Sao Paulo and Rio and a reception at the British Embassy completed the state visit to Brazil. The Queen and the Duke then flew to Santiago, where the President and Senora Frei welcomed them to Chile. Having addressed the National Congress the Queen inaugurated the new engineering training centre to which Britain has contributed technical equipment. Other royal engagements included a tribute at the Bernard O’Higgins memorial, a display of horsemanship by the crack Carabineros team, receipt of the Freedom of the City of Valparaiso and a race-meeting at the Hipico Club.
