- Summary
- COI synopsis: At the Rothamsted Experimental Station near London they’re using a "mechanical cow" to remove the indigestible cellulose fibres from plants, leaving a valuable protein powder which can be included in any diet. The Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew are helping in the hunt for new vegetable sources of protein by making an exhaustive catalogue of the world’s plant-life - and in their seed bank is stored genetic material that could bring us still more sources of food. But, in some future harvest festival the fruits of the earth may all have been synthesised in test tubes. Our children are growing taller, living longer, and the whole chemistry of food will inevitably be much closer to their daily lives if they are to survive.
