Summary
BFI synopsis: Looks at the lives and work of servicemen in the United States Third Air Force, mainly operating from RAF bases in East Anglia. The provisions of amenities such as shops and American schools on the base are considered, and links with the local population with exchanges between English and American school children. In leisure time servicemen play American football, and the film also looks at the base hospital, with the matron Lieutenant-Colonel Genevieve Haines, and Staff Sergeant George Williams on an ambulance case. Integration with the locals is emphasised with a look at Captain Mirabelle Missly, who does bell-ringing at the church at Godmanchester, near Huntingdon, and serviceman Larry Edgeland marrying the English Pat Sullivan, who is in the WRAF. Staff Sergeant Don Regan is also seen, whose wife helps with the local over-60s club, and Captain Playle and his large home near Ruislip. The film ends with a look at crews on the alert, led by Colonel Spain, Commander of a reconnaisance Wing.
