Summary
BFI synopsis: A feature looking at the history of Ordnance Survey maps, including some early examples made by cartographers from 300 and 100 years ago. Surveyors are shown at a triangulation station measuring the angle between two distant points, and the various markings and surveys involved in formulating a map are illustrated. Teams of surveyors are seen in the Scottish Highlands, and urban, rural and aerial maps are also looked at. The drawing and printing of the final maps at Southampton is also shown, with draughtsmen and printers at work. At the Chessington headquarters, Surrey, a special machine folds the maps, which are then attached to their covers.
