Summary
BFI synopsis: Miners from Snowdown Colliery practice water-skiing off Folkestone.
NCB Commentary - After their nightshift Bill Roberts and his mates - maintenance workers at Kent’s Snowdon colliery - head for the sea.
In their case it’s Folkestone - only a few miles from the pit.
Moving around a crowded coalface, says Bill, is easy compared to the effort of getting moving on water skis. This is the tricky part of the sport - after that it’s relatively plain sailing.
But it’s not a game for novices, and as yet water-skiing hasn’t caught on in Britain in a big way. One good reason may well be that our coastal waters are too cold. But the pace is certainly hot.
Back at Snowdon, where they’ll be tonight, at least it’s warm - and it’s dry.
