Summary
NoS synopsis: Denaby Utd lose to Oldham Athletic in the FA Cup 1st round
NCB Commentary - Its cup season and mining team Denaby United are at home to Oldham Athletic in the first round. Denaby supporters are mainly mining folk who back their local team with contributions from the wage packet.
In the dressing room Captain George Pilkington of Aughton Main Colliery kits up with surface worker Peter Mills. There’s a last word from Manager Arthur Roberts, also in mining. Trainer Sheppards is a mining man too.
Team mascot, Arthur Earp gets ready to lead his men on to the field.
From the other gate come 4th Division Oldham Athletic, with white sleeves.
This really is a mining occasion - Referee Ken Stokes is an electician at Ollerton pit.
Early in the first half, Denaby had most of the play but were unable to cash in on their opportunities.
Although the more experienced side, Oldham didn’t have it all their own way. But Oldham were often enough up the Denaby end of the field to test colliery fitter Ted Smedhurst in the Denaby goal.
This one was off side.
For Oldham, Thompson and Basley formed the spearhead of the attack. Then just before half time, Thompson slammed in Oldham’s first.
Disappointment among the home supporters, but despite all Denaby’s efforts in the second half, they were not able to equalize the score. And after one hour’s play Thompson made it two for Athletic.
By now it was all over bar the shouting. Denaby did well to test the more experienced 4th Division side, but could not make up the leeway.
As the final whistle sounded and the two teams left the Welfare ground at Denaby, the home team had the consolation of being, this year, the only mining team to negotiate the qualifying stages and figure in the first round porper of the F. A. Cup contest.
