Summary
BFI synopsis: N.U.M. president Ernest Jones opens two Nottinghamshire training centres for miners
NCB Commentary - Grassmoor Training Centre in Nottinghamshire is open for business.
Two years ago, in Mining Review, we saw the early beginnings of this up-to-date Training Centre.
At that time, boys in training were helping to carry out much of the outdoor construction work.
Today, some of the parents of East Midlands trainees gather to hear the President of the National Union of Mineworkers, Ernest Jones, declare open the Training Centre.
Jones made some good points in his speech.
From Grassmoor, Ernest Jones travelled across to Lound Hall.
At this second Training Centre, which will handle 600 boys a year, he was greeted by Coal Board officials.
He had this to say on the place of training in the industry.
At Lound Hall, once a great country house, the stable quarters and outbuildings are today the scene of intensive practical training in modern mining techniques and all that goes with it.
In the paddock, a mine roadway and training face have been built.
With 1200 boys a year at Grassmoor, as well as Lound Hall’s 600, the outlook for training in the East Midlands is bright.
Lound Hall represents collaboration between the mining industry and the local authority.
It will be up to the Coal Board and to the Union, which Ernest Jones represents, to see that the demands of the future will be met.
