- Summary
- BFI synopsis: four Derbyshire miners win £75,000 on the football pools. Stanley Wright, Malcolm Pugh, Cyril Calladines and William Ford (from Glapwell Colliery) collect their winnings from Vernon’s Pools.
NCB Commentary - Here’s the story of four lucky miners from Derbyshire. This is Stanley Wright, who filled in the winning coupon, leaving hom with Mrs. Wright, who filled in the winning coupon, leaving home with Mrs. Wright for the presentation. Mining Review’s cameraman was just in time to catch Malcolm Pugh, another of the winners, as he left home with Mrs. Pugh to join in the share-out. Third man is Cyril Calladine, seen here with Mrs. Calladine, and the two young Calladines, and some more of the family and - heavens, it’s Grandma as well.
Up at Glapwell Colliery, where they all work, there was time for a quick cupper with the fourth winner, William Ford, while they waited for the Good News Man from Liverpool. The presentation didn’t take long; pit manager T. M. Cope took a deep breath and passed the cheque over. Seventy five thousand and 37 pounds ten - no wonder there are so many happy faces around.
Back into Chesterfield went the boys, past the crooked spire, and across to the bank, where manager Moreton had opened up on Saturday afternoon. A signature or two, new cheque books all round, and the boys could relax.
Of course there was a bit of a party that Saturday night: what with the Pools people and everyone’s friends and relations, there was quite a crowd. Drinks on the house. That’s the Mayor on the right.
But Stanley Wright and his mates are carrying on as usual back at the pit, and here’s how you’ll find them on Wednesday evenings at home. They say that lightning never strikes twice, but you never can tell. - Researcher Comments
