British Pathe synopsis: "Nobody knows when or where cameos first originated, but we went to the old Italian town of Torre del Greco, to find out how they are made - " Panning shot of the town’s rooftops. Interior of a workroom where cameos are being made. The workers all wear visors. "Years of training are needed to make good Cameo bases. The commoner ones are made from sea shells - " C/U of baskets full of large shells. Man’s hands are seen as he examines one of the shells. "A disc, cut from the shell, is cemented on to a temporary holder - " C/U of man at work making the base of a cameo. "Only a Cameo cutter knows how hard a sea-shell really is - " C/U of man with small hand tool working on the cameo. He is marking out the design. He has a piece of paper showing the design in front of him. The man chips away at the cameo with a small tool. "Before the Three Graces can grace some other Grace, the flat portion has to be coloured and polished - " C/U of the colour being applied. A hard brush is then used to polish the cameo. More paint is applied and the cameo is polished again. Artist makes the finishing touches to his piece. "And as for the rest - " C/U of group of ornate cameos laid on a black background. C/Us of a cameo depicting a horse drawn Roman chariot.
