Summary

COI synopsis: Science can frequently be startling and dramatic. But that drama is often the result of the painstaking gathering of detailed information. This programme explores how really accurate measurement can offer us greater safety or, indeed, improve our welfare. There’s a different steel for every job: steels to stand enormous temperatures or maybe immense pressures. But checking that you have the right steel has always been a matter of subjectivity. Until now. Now a portable, gun-like instrument strikes an arc and electronically analyses the resultant cloud of metal vapour. The job is accurate and foolproof.
