Summary
COI synopsis: This edition deals with atomic energy, from the first splitting of the atom to the nuclear power stations of today. It features: the opening of Bradwell and Berkeley atomic power stations by Prince Philip, modern applications of radio-isotopes, the production of atomic energy, the Atomic Energy Research Establishment at Harwell, the Royal Navy reactor JASON at Greenwich, built with a view to the future when ships will run on atomic power, research on the reactor DRAGON at Winfrith Heath, the British-built reactors in Japan and Italy, the advanced gas-cooled reactor at Windscale and the plutonium burning reactor at Dounreay, which produces more atomic fuel than it burns.
