MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Sporting Highlights of 1977. DESCRIPTION: Highlights from some of the Sporting Events which Movietone have covered during 1977. The skill and experience of Austrian Franz Klammer in a World Cup Ski Event at Garmisch. Oxford win the University Boat Race by seven lengths and ocean going yachts leave Portsmouth for the Round the World Yacht Race. In the Equestrian Field ‘Red Rum’ wins his third Grand National and Lester Piggott on ‘The Minstrel’ his record eighth Derby. Lucinda Prior-Palmer became European Three-Day Event Champion for the second time. Manchester United takes the FA Cup from Liverpool by two goals to one and James Hunt wins the British Grand Prix. In Wimbledon’s Centenary Tournament Bjorn Borg of Sweden takes the Men’s Title and Britain’s Virginia Wade, after sixteen years of trying, takes the Womens’. For the first time the World Hot Air Ballooning Championships were held in Britain and this peaceful sport ends our look back at Sporting 1977. SHOTLIST: CU title Sporting Highlights of the Year. MS Red Rum crosses line to win (2 riderless horses), Red Rum with jockey Tommy Stack being led in. Epsom - The Derby: Slow motion horses round corner. MS horses round Tattenham Corner ‘Million Dollar Man’ in lead from ‘Hot Grove’, ‘The Minstrel’ and ‘Caporello’. TS horses towards finish. ‘The Minstrel’ 1st and ‘Hot Grove’ 2nd towards finish. ‘The Minstrel’ into paddock - Lester Piggott dismounts. Wembley - FA Cup Final: Manchester United v Liverpool. Half-time kick off. MS Margaret Thatcher in Royal Box. Various of football and crowds. Stuart Pearson (Manchester United) scores goal. Various of football Jimmy Case (Liverpool) scores goal.
