- Summary
- MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: The Jubilee Derby. DESCRIPTION: The 198th renewal of the Derby Stakes and Epsom Racecourse is bedecked with flags in this Jubilee Year. Her Majesty the Queen arrived at the course to a tumultuous greeting from the crowd. Together with other members of the Royal Family and accompanied by Lord Halifax, the Queen visited the paddock to study the form. Hot favourite to win was the Aga Khan’s horse ‘Blushing Groom’ but in the event he was only placed third. As if to set the seal on the Jubilee, riding in his 25th Derby, Lester Piggott was first past the post. ‘The Minstrel’, owned by Robert Sangster, won by a neck from ‘Hot Grove’, giving Lester Piggott a record eighth Derby win.
