Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Bombshell at Blackpool. DESCRIPTION: Conjecture and confusion followed the news on the eve of the Conservative Conference of the Prime Minister’s operation. Then, from the London hospital, Lord Home brought the biggest bombshell of all: that Mr Harold Macmillan will be resigning. So began all the speculation as to who would succeed him. Was the Chancellor Mr Maudling too young at 46? Lord Hailsham’s promise to renounce his peerage, confirmed his strong popularity for leadership. Responsibility, of course, had already fallen on the other main contender, Mr Butler, now the Acting Prime Minister. But along with all the conjecture was a deep sympathy and admiration for Mr Macmillan, who has served longer than any Premier this century, and who has done so much to ease world crises.
