Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: South Africa Goes Out. DESCRIPTION: A fateful date, when South Africa becomes a republic and withdraws from the Commonwealth. The news came as a great shock, though everyone knew that Commonwealth premiers, meeting in London, were at grips with Dr Verwoerd and his government’s racial policy. Throughout this beautiful land, there has long been opposition to government policy. One example is the black sash demonstrations of protest, which began six years ago. It’s not only the descendants of British settlers who form the opposition. Elections have been strongly contested, with the racial policy featuring prominently; but the party in favour of apartheid won. SHOTLIST: CU calendar showing date. Flashback to the Commonwealth Premiers Conference. Various scenes of the Premiers in groups. GV of Table mountain, views of the countryside from train. Black sash demonstration, women wearing black sashes outside building and in street. Election scenes, people with banners. LS of the Voortrekkers memorial. CU veterans of the Boer War. CU calendar showing date.
