MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: River Indus. DESCRIPTION: Rising in the Himalayas, the Indus flows on through the Northern plains to become, with its 5 tributaries, one of the world’s greatest river systems. For some 10 years, the use of its waters has been the cause of dispute between India and Pakistan. So it’s good to report that agreement on this particular problem has at-last been achieved. To sign the Waters Agreement, India’s Prime Minister, Mr Nehru, flew to Karachi, and Field Marshal Ayub Khan, Pakistan’s President, was there to welcome him. It was at the President’s palace, that the agreement was officially clinched. Britain, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, America and West Germany also signed the scheme as contributors. Over 50 million people will be vitally affected by this great success, largely the result of patient work by the World Bank. The solution, which should ensure a fair division of water to both countries, is a ten-year project, to which Britain is a major contributor in a 360 million pound development scheme.
