Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Queen Inspects Vc’s. DESCRIPTION: Three hundred men of supreme valour marched on to Parade in Hyde Park for the Review by the Queen of holders of the Victoria Cross. Since the decoration was instituted a hundred years ago, 1,347 awards have been made. SHOTLIST: Various shots of the parade. MLS Queen and Duke in open horse drawn carriage. MCU Queen and Duke. General Lord Freyberg greets the Queen. Queen inspecting the men who have received the VC. Queen talking to man in wheelchair. Duke talking to man in wheelchair. Queen talking. Princess Margaret, Queen Mother and Duke of Gloucester. Queen makes speech: On the 29th January 1856, Queen Victoria created the Victoria Cross. It was to be awarded to those fighting men who in the presence of the fighting enemy performed some single act of valour or devotion to their country. (A painting of the presentation in 1856 is seen whilst the Queen is making her speech). Slip pan to Indian soldier and various other soldiers who have won the VC). Shot of Winston Churchill in the crowd putting a cigar into his mouth. LS of the crowd. MLS of the Queen talking: We are not a war like nation, but whenever war has come, our fighting men have shown a standard of courage which has inspired the respect of all nations and the dead of the aggressor. In all the changes of these 100 years, that courage has not changed, but shall the need arise, which God forbid, we can be sure of this, that they will not be wanting other brave spirits to uphold a record of those whose deeds during the past eventful century we proudly commemorate today.
