MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Princess Elizabeth Opens South Africa Graving Dock. DESCRIPTION: Princess Elizabeth and Margaret enjoyed an early morning ride on Bonza Beach near East London. At East London Princess Elizabeth carried out her first solo engagement when she opened the new 2 million pound Graving Dock. SHOTLIST: KS CU Coat of Arms of South Africa. At Sterkstroom, Royal Family walk along through crowds of residents, in pouring rain, each has an umbrella. Stopping and talking (silent) to some, natives dancing in the rain. MS Queen talking to man with baby in his arms. At Bonza Beach, near East London, Princess Elizabeth about to and mounting her horse. MS Princess Margaret already mounted. SCU of Margaret. Ponies walk off, through woodlands onto beach, trotting along beach, cantering along beach. Ponies walk off beach out of camera back into woodlands, taken in the early morning, sea breaking on beach in background. Princesses are in riding habit with cowboy type hats. At East London, Princess Elizabeth’s car stops, Princess Elizabeth alights followed by her lady-in-waiting. Mr Sturrock steps forward and greets (shakes hands) her. They walk towards dais, past cheering crowds, seen in background. Both mount dais. Cut-in of cheering children, waving small flags etc. GV right to left Mrs Sturrock, Princess and Mr Sturrock (Minister of Transport). MS Princess Elizabeth making her speech, speaking about the welfare of South Africa and it’s industries. CU of her saying I have great pleasure in declaring the Princess Elizabeth Graving Dock open. Mrs Sturrock presents Princess Elizabeth with box of diamonds, several shots. SCU Princess Elizabeth inspecting same and remarking thanking her etc. for same. Crowds cheering. Princess Elizabeth walks to flag mast to unfurl International ‘C’ Flag. SCU flag being unfurled. GV frigate Transvaal approaching graving dock, and breaking ribbon placed across entrance, frigate ‘dressed’ for the occasion, sailors line decks. GV Princess Elizabeth in fore with frigate passing in background. GVs of frigate making way along dock. NB The shot of Princess Elizabeth declaring docks open is shaky (sound material).
