Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: VJ Day Celebrations. DESCRIPTION: Mr Attlee broadcast at midnight the news that victory over Japan was complete. VJ Day coincided with the Royal Opening of Parliament and the King and Queen’s drive to Westminster began the two days of celebrations. Crowds gathered outside Buckingham Palace waiting to cheer their sovereign and kept themselves entertained by singing. At night floodlighting and bonfires lit up the skies of London and the rejoicing continued. SHOTLIST: SCU Mr Attlee making midnight speech. Newspaper into letter box - looking over shoulder of person reading headline "Japan Unconditionally surrenders". Newspapers being thrown onto table Daily Mirror, Daily Mail, Daily Express, Daily Herald. GV Royal Standard flying on Buckingham Palace. Pan down to Royal procession leaving escorted by Household Cavalry. The King and Queen in open landau. Various shots during drive to Parliament, through Horse Guards Parade - past Cenotaph - arrival at House of Commons. SCU trumpeter on horseback. Police hold crowds back. Tracking shots of crowds in Trafalgar Square - also Piccadilly Circus with people dancing, waving cheering and generally going mad. Fellow dancing strips to waist. Outside Buckingham Palace huge crowds assemble, people clambering over the Victoria Memorial. Crowds singing extracts from several songs "Colonel Bogey", "Goodbyee", "Keep the Home Fires Burning", "Roll Out the Barrel", "Lambeth Walk", Bless Em All". Crowds shouting "We Want The King". Royal family on balcony waving to cheering crowds. House of Commons MPs crossing road to St Margaret’s church, includes Churchill, Eden, Attlee, Herbert Morrison in the lead. NIGHT SHOTS: Floodlit buildings including St Paul’s - Tower of London - Houses of Parliament and looking down river (good shots). People dancing around bonfire, old women dancing to piano in Old Kent Road open space. Girls dances on top of piano. Piccadilly Circus immense crowds dancing and enjoying themselves.
