Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Battle for the Salient. DESCRIPTION: News of the fighting in and around the Rundstedt salient was still rather scarce, when this captured film of the German push reached Britain. The latest film from the Americans shows them supervising the mass evacuation of civilians from Malmedy. Meanwhile, men of General Patton’s 3rd Army were driving a wedge into the Salient in the south and widening the Bastogne corridor. SHOTLIST: Cut story - KS Lines of burning Allied vehicles. Various of Germans advancing along roads & across fields (last 2 shots from captured German reel). Signpost ‘Bastogne’, American MP’s check identity of civilians passing into our lines. Also check GIs in jeep. In Malmedy civilians evacuated by lorries to town of Spa. Various of women & children. ES of ruins (smouldering) of Malmedy, lorry drives through remains of streets, a few civilians make their way through streets. US troops fight fires with water. Various of snow-covered battlefields. LS troops cross fields. Explosions in background. Aerials of C47’s in formation flying low over country, drop supplies to troops, supplies falling. Sherman tank along road passes stationary Army transport. Groups of Colonel Hogan’s men who black their faces & march through enemy lines back to base. ES of battlefield with explosions in background. Aerial of Mitchells & Bostons in flight over target (road junctions) dropping bombs, various explosions. Aerials of snow covered country. CU Mitchell in flight. Aerials of marshalling yards, shows fires, flares & more explosions, bombed by Lancasters. Lancaster passes under camera.
