Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Rome Greets Allied Armies. DESCRIPTION: First pictures of the capture of Rome, show Allied troops driving through the centre of the city. General Clark soon arrived to be met by Marshal Juin commander of the French forces. Shortly after the allied entry into the city, a vast crowd gathered at St Peter’s to listen to the Pope. SHOTLIST: Cut story - (RAFFU - KS Aerial panning shots of Rome, shows Colosseum, Palazza Pietro, Victor Emmanuel II monument, and St Peter’s.). (AFU - On outskirts of Rome, Sherman tanks along roadway, Italian Wedding procession pass Sherman tanks & astonished crews, various shots. German prisoners marched along road, Italian on bicycle hurls imprecations at them.) (Wyand - Trucking shots of General Clark in Jeep entering Rome, through cheering crowds, procession pass Colosseum.) (AFU - Crowds outside Piazza Venezia (Mussolini’s home) famous balcony in fore.) (Wyand - Procession arrives at Capital, Juin & Clark walk up steps to balcony. Group on balcony, in background are the American, British & Italian flags flying. Shots of American Mechanised and Infantry passing through cheering crowds). GV of Rome, in background can be seen St Peter’s & walls of Vatican City, in fore is the Piazza del Popolo. CU Bell ringing.) (RAFFU - Crowds swarm to St Peter’s Square, some carry signs, elevated shot of same. Square packed with people. LS Pope Pius walking onto balcony addresses people, who applaud and cheer.) (AFU - smoke rises from doorway of building after bomb had been thrown into same (unseen), crowds scatter, anti-Fascist auto gun between bars of door. Irate Italians smash door of former German Radio Station, and kick out Italian Quislings who have been working for them.)
