- Summary
- Pathe synopsis: Visit the "fragrant harbour" - the old Chinese name for Hong Kong, and see how the Crown Colony is preparing to "do a Japan" - launch itself into the international consumer goods market in a big way. It’s a skyscraper city but Old Chinatown is still there. The "ladder" streets offer goods from both worlds old and new. You can get a facelift in the street, a brownpaper bag of fish and chips chopsticks style and, of course, flowers and live fish everywhere. And right in the middle of the concrete jungle - a cricket pitch. The old ways mean a living in the New Territories, for a half a million people who live on rich farmland leased from Red China. And they get water to irrigate their gardens and paddy fields - ploughed all the year round by oxen. There are fabulous beaches too. Repulse Bay has that Monte Carlo feeling, but there are scores of secluded spots like West Bay which the Californian-style beach generation have taken over for late-night barbecues with big fat lobsters as the speciality. But for some the nightclub hotspots of Wanchai offer all they want in a city where the night sky is that much neon brighter than the day.
