- Summary
- Pathe synopsis: Need there be any introduction. Who could imagine a landscape of windmills silently protecting an acreage of tulips could be anywhere but - Holland. Yes, this is the heart of tulip country, but not even farmers can inspire such rapid growth as you see in the mechanical wonders of Elfinland, a story-book world where children can wander and meet the fabled Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Little Red Riding Hood and Sleeping Beauty. There’s even a magic carpet trip but there was nothing mystifying about the arrival of 700 British farmers’ wives who came to visit the bulbfields. First stop was Rotterdam, a modern engineering miracle where the mighty harbour and 300-ft Euromast have proudly risen from the wreckage of war. Quite a different picture, in fact, from what you see on a water-bus ride through Amsterdam’s canals. Yet how could anyone, amid all the architectural wonder, forget that the real wonder of Holland is the colour on the fields. Those farmers’ wives have come at Festival time, and not even our English-style drizzle dilutes the brilliant colours of the flowering floats and front-garden mosaics.
